Wow, 10 years. 10 years? Well, on 29 December 2003 I left for Sierra Leone. The plan was
11 months in Africa. But who knows God’s ways? 10 years in Africa. 10 years of
serving God in so many different places. 10 years of seeing His provision so many times over. I think it is time
for me to read all my newsletter again to be reminded of all the times God was
visibly present in my circumstances. Thank you Lord, You are Great and Good. It
has cost me something, but I have received so much more:
“I tell you
the truth, “ Jesus replied “no one who has left home or brother or sister or
mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to
receive a hundred times as much in this present age…” (Mark 10:29-30)
One of the
highlights of cause was a wife and three children, but also hundreds of
brothers and sisters in Christ. What a privilege to serve God, many times under
the poor, the orphan, the sick, the broken.
If I was
able to be at least of some help, it is because of folded hands, open pockets,
unexpected gifts, right words at the right time, from so many people around the
globe. Thank you, Lord, for all of these people.
I smile if
I look at one of our monthly gifts on our bank statement- it still says: ‘For
Carl, on the Anastasis.’ The Anastasis has long been melted in India, but with
these and many other helpers, the work could go on for the last ten years. It
is not that it is always easy, or has always been easy, but the reward has been
worth it all. It is not always that we are even able to see the fruit of our
labour. Some seed takes longer to germinate, and some seed have been watered by
others. In my own life the seed was planted when I was a small boy, but only
brought forth fruit when I was almost 27. All in God’s time!

Maar waar ik zoveel mocht zijn als een helpende hand dat was
alleen mogelijlk door gevouwen handen, financiele steun, praktische goederen,
een bemoediging, door mensen wereld
wijd. Dank U Heere hoe u mensen op verschillende manieren gebruikt.
Ik moet altijd nog glimlachen als ik een van de maandelijkse
giften zie met de beschrijving: Voor Carl op de Anastasis. Het staal van de
Anastasis is allang omgesmolten tot iets in India. Maar dankzij zoveel trouwe
medewerkers heeft Gods werk tien jaar handen gehad om barmhartigheid kunnen
betonen.
Het romantische deel is er wel af naar 10 jaar en het was
zeker niet altijd gemakkelijk maar het mooie overtreft dat meer als ruimschoots.
Of het vrucht gedragen heeft weet ik niet. Sommige zaadjes
nemen langer de tijd als anderen en soms zijn het anderen die het bewateren.
Maar God geeft de groei op Zijn tijd. Waar het evangelie in mijn kinderjaren
werd geplant begon het niet eerder vrucht te dragen dan na mijn 27ste
jaar of zo. Alles op Zijn tijd!
Just before
we move on to the present we would just like to make mention of the fact that
in the last month, one of our most faithful supporters passed away. Their
family has supported first Carl and later us, since 2005. I am not going to
mention his name, for privacy reason. But hope his wife and children are aware
of our sympathy and prayers. He did not let one single newsletter go by without
writing us a small note of encouragement. We are going to miss him, not nearly
as much as his family, but our lives will miss a spark every month. We praise
God for the Hope we can have in Him that this is not the end.
Ook willen we een getrouwe medewerker gedenken die onlangs
is overleden. Altijd een van de eersten om een hart onder de riem te steken na
een nieuwsbrief, al vele jaren lang. We wensen de nabestaanden Gods vrede en
bemoediging toe, wetend dat hij naar een Euwige huis is gegaan.

And so the new year has started in Zambia. The rain has changed the dry land into a green
oasis, We had good rainfall. Our test fields of maize using conservation
farming has shown the potential of the land if you plant ON TIME and feed your
plants well. The differences are marked where we planted on time, gave
fertilizer and made effort with weed control. Living between the small farmers
they are able to see the difference, and we are able to see the normal
standard. Two of the families we did the training with, will be given a larger
piece of land next year- they will develop it, we provide the seed and
fertilizer and share in the harvest. A win/win situation. They don’t
work for us, they work with us.
En zo zijn we het nieuwe jaar begonnen in Zambia. De regens
hebben het land verandert in een groene oase al is het nog niet zoveel wat er
gevallen is gemiddelt. De proefplotten met maize gebaseerd op een deel van
behoudende agricultuur laten het potentiaal zien wat het land kan bieden door
op TIJD te planten en goede voeding te geven. De verschillen zijn erg groot met
op tijd planten, kunst mest en onkruidbeheer (al moet het betere nog komen als
er meer organisch materiaal wordt toegevoed door de jaren). Het is een goede ervaring
en door dat we midden tussen de boertjes (niet denigrerend) zitten zien en horen we wat de standaarden zijn hier. Twee
van de families waarmee we training volgen, hopen volgend jaar een groter stuk
te gaan geven. Zij zullen ons land egaliseren en recht maken en wij zullen voor
de kunstmest en zaad zorgen. Een win/win situatie.

We are now
busy developing a piece of land to cultivate tomatoes and other vegetables. The
development progresses as the finances are available. This is the best time of
the year to work on the land since the ground is soft, because once the rains
stop the ground will turn hard again.
In our own
home we are still working to get our electric system working well. We have now
received a inverter which finally makes it possible to run a small fridge, so
we have to go to town less for fresh products. Now we have to enlarge our
battery power again to be able to store enough power to run the fridge through
out.
We have
also been blessed with a little dog, you can see a photo on the blog as well
(see under older posts). She is a pleasure, though every morning I have to go
fish all our shoes from her basket;)
We have
discovered that Zambia is a very expensive country to live in. Grocery prices
are literally double that of South Africa. Once we are up and running we should
be able to generate an income from the land, but it will take time. We are
weekly baking bread and selling it, but the profit from that is very low. Thus,
if you feel led to support us, please feel free.

We zijn nu bezig om een stuk grond recht te maken om tomaten
en andere groentes te gaan verbouwen. De ontwikkeling gaat stukje voor stukje
afhankelijk van financieen. Deze tijd van het jaar is de beste tijd om het land
recht te maken omdat de grond zacht is. Want zodra de regens zijn opgehouden
wordt de grond na verloop van tijd door de zon weer keihard.
Inmiddels zijn een aantal goederen uit zuid afrika
overgekomen en nu kunnen we gebruik gaan maken van een koelkastje (afhankelijk
van de zon sinds ons batterij systeem nog een beetje klein is).
Verder zijn we gezegend met een hondje. Haar naam is Shally
(van Shalom). Een zwarte labrador/staffyshire. De kinderen zijn weg van

We zijn er inmiddels achtergekomen dat Zambia een duur land
is. De prijzen zijn het dubbele van die in Zuid Afrika. Om onze doelen te
bereiken heeft zijn tijd nodig maar aan de andere kant is er de mogelijkheid om
geld te genereren van de grond. Een van die mogelijkheden is om alle grond te
egaliseren nu de grond nog vochtig zodat daar volgend jaar mais op geplant kan
worden en andere gewassen. Ook moet een afrastering komen. Als er iemand nog
een oude sok in huis heeft liggen en een
gift wil geven of een rentevrije lening wil verstrekken met een paar jaar afbetaaltijd. Voel je meer
als welkom.
Our goals here are:
1. Training in conservation farming to
the pastors being trained by Hope Builders Ministries Zambia- so that these
pastors can lend a helping hand to their communities, and especially the
vulnerable, all over Zambia.
2. Training to the community around us,
to try and break the circle of poverty (for instance by producing more per
hectare).
3. To develop the land as training
facility for agriculture and other technics.
4. To provide housing for widows and
orphans, so that they can live independently.
5. Production of vegetables, fruit,
meat as income for Hope Builders Ministries and ourselves.

Onze doelen hier zijn
1.
Training in behoudende landbouw te geven aan
pastors die samenwerken met Hope Builders Ministries Zambia, zodat deze pastors
beter hulp kunnen verlenen aan behoeftigen binnen hun gemeenschap.
2.
Training te geven aan de gemeenschap rondom ons
om mensen uit de armoede circel proberen te halen als zij dat willen (d.m.v
betere productie per hectare wat gemakkelijk haalbaar is).
3.
De gegeven grond te ontwikkelen als training
facilitie voor landbouw en technieken.
4.
Behuizing te kunnen bieden aan weduwen en
weeskinderen zodat zij voor zichzelf kunnen zorgen en zelfstandig
kunnen leven.
5.
Produceren van groentes, fruit, vlees voor
financiele onafhankelijkheid van de organisatie voor dit project en
gedeeltelijk ons zelf.
