"But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:15b)

Yesterday was a day of disillusionment to me. For a long time I have viewed Jeremiah’s wife as one of my inspirations. One of those behind the scene hero’s that made Jeremiah’s work possible. Even though she has never been mentioned in the bible, she had impact because she made it possible for her husband to fulfil his ministry, and have huge impact in the world. That gave me a feeling like all the extremely unimportant things I keep myself busy with, has some purpose. And then yesterday, I found out Jeremiah was single, and with that I found out my hero was an illusion.

OK, so I’ll take my tongue out of my cheek now. It is sometimes very unromantic on the mission field as the wife of so-and-so. And it is a very quick cure for pride. Very little I do today will change tomorrow. On the other hand, the little I do today, does make sure we all get to tomorrow alive. So, I guess that counts for something:

Col 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

I have found a whole bunch of photo’s, so I think I am going to be more quiet, and allow the pictures to tell the story about a busy month:

On th 27th of July, we got to witness this beautiful lunar eclipse.

Psalm 8:1” Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.”

On the second of August, Jeanet (who is helping us in many ways) wrote an article in a young magazine in the Netherlands, so our children had their first moment of fame

In the beginning of this month we had a baptismal service at our church for people who wanted to declare their faith publicly. The young man on the right, had the most heavenly smile as he came out of the water, it was almost as if he was expecting to see something. The young woman on the left is a friend of ours. She grew up Muslim, and recently came to meet Jesus because of seeds that other people have sewn. I now, am privileged to spend some time with her every week. She makes me want to cry sometimes, when I see how eager she just breathes in every word out of the Bible. When she had to be baptized, I asked if she was OK with the muddy water. She replied: that’s just how life is, when you look down, it is a mess, when you look up, it is all beautiful. She is teaching me so much!

This is her son with Simon

Carl’s vegetables are slowly going ahead. He is working on the whole tunnel idea, hopefully more about that soon.

Dam for the irrigation of the vegetables (enjoyed by the children;))

Chickens that will soon go into someone’s pot…

We bought an incubator from a friend, to try and hatch our one chickens.(On the right is a small incubator we are borrowing as hatching box, whole Carl builds his own:
The first chickens from the incubator. Turkeys expected this week.

My father, second from the left, came with a team from Tennessee for a few days. They did evangelism in the day time, and spend the evenings with us. Was really a great time, they just left yesterday, and we will miss them. Here a few pictures of them working in the villages:

(the last one is of them helping Carl make the hatching box).

We also met a man, that is praying about the possibility of joining us on a longer term. We need to see where this leads…

The reality of Islam in Africa.
Reality of our roads

Just some fun family pictures:

A trip to a dairy

Sunday School Holiday fun

Story to end with: We bought some new rabbits from a friend. On the way to us the one female had babies, in the car! So, we got 8 for the price of 4J On top of that, the friend then placed with wrong rabbit with the babies. Drama-drama.

Blessings, there is always something to smile at in life. Lots of love!

Nieuwsbrief Augustus 2018

As we drove back into Zambia after about 8000km, I said: Welcome to the land of Dust and Honey! O, how bitter sweet to return home. Sweet to be back in our own little corner of the world, but very bitter because of the damage the mice and rats did. The Joys!

We had a lovely break in June- saw friends and family, spend time next to the sea, walking, driving, watching. It was good. Good to look at something different, and come to rest. It was an amazing time with lots of special people, good conversations. It was like a breath of fresh air, and now back to work. (I have placed some pictures on the blog, so that you can see only if you want to).

We came back to a slower season. It is winter here, so plants grow slower. Carl is still working on his plan to install some tunnels, so he can better control the temperature. Winter is Carl’s time to try catch up with all his maintenance. Always a frustrating time because it is not easy to get the parts he need to maintain, so he is stuck with lots of puzzles- fixing doors, cages, cars  and and and

We have been working on our little zoo, though. Some more good friends left, and we bought over their collection of turkeys. We are in the process of also buying their incubator, and all the possibilities that unlocks. In the whole of Zambia there is a shortage of small chicks, so we are hoping to get our own eggs hatching. Carl’s brought in some roosters to bring some potential. We have 250 new chicks for meat. We’ve had a litter of rabbits born, though this business is dwindling to mere fun- people are not so keen on eating our cute bunnies. Our bee hives are finally filling up. And all other creatures are of the unwelcome rodent family, and with them come the predators- the owls and snakes. Truly, soon we will be able to ask entrance fees.

I am in the middle of introducing you to some of our colleagues. Mary is one of my favourites. She is a close neighbour. Many years ago her husband decided to take a second wife, a much younger woman. The husband and second wife decided it would be nice to become rich quickly, so they got themselves some bones and other charms. Mary decided she had enough, and walked out on them. It means that she has no real form of provision. So, she lives in a little hut close to us, with lots of little children always flocking around her hut. When another neighbour left her abusive husband, and decided to get even by leaving his children behind, Mary took them in. For just over a year now, Mary has been helping in the gardens. She started off just watering, but I discovered that she truly has green fingers, so now I allow her to play in the garden. What I love, is that she has taken ownership of the garden. She comes to show me (because we communicated solely by hand gestures) some new seed she had found somewhere, and we plant it to see what new treasure we can discover. She sees for herself what is necessary, and acts. This is a seldom found trait, believe you me. A real treasure.

We just dropped my Mom at the airport this morning, after she spent the last 7 weeks in Zambia, though only the last few days with us. She has been doing leadership conferences with Hope Builders Ministries, in both the Eastern Province and follow-up conferences in the Southern Province, where we are. I did 1 last year with her, and was tired, they did 14. They saw amazing things happen. If you would like to read more of her stories: www.hbmin.org  is the place.
And me and the kids: we keep ourselves occupied. Schooling in the mornings, with all the joys and tears, and then anything we can get involved in, in the afternoons. I will try find a few photos for you.

Till next month, blessings:

God has awakened in me this need for His Rest, a safe place where He is my all. This has been my mission of late, to walk in His Rest, and not to strive to always appear busy. May this safe place envelop you too.
