Nieuwsbrief Maart 2018

Stop alsjeblieft met bidden J. Jullie gebeden zijn beantwoord. We hebben de laatste weken ongelooflijke hoeveelheden regen gezien. Enkele weken geleden hadden we een uitzonderlijk nat weekend. De maandagochtend erna ontdekten we dat de huizen van onze directe buren compleet of gedeeltelijk waren ingestort. Gelukkig is nog niet het koudste seizoen, want ze slapen nu tijdelijk in huizen met gordijnen als muren. En de regen blijft maar komen. Veel van de oogst was al verloren voordat de regen startte, maar deze regen is goed om de dammen te vullen voor komend seizoen, de wintergewassen.

Hieronder twee foto’s van de regen van afgelopen tijd. De eerste foto is gemaakt tijdens onze bijencursus (meer hierover verderop in de nieuwsbrief). Het regende toen erg hard en Carl maakte met zijn mobiel deze foto. De andere foto is van de weg voor ons huis. Zoals je kunt zien, lijkt het nu meer een zwembad J.

Misschien kan ik jullie iets vertellen over enkele van onze buren. In de afgelopen maanden is Carl druk geweest met de organisatie van het project. Het was voor hem een flink gevecht om de mensen met wie hij samenwerkt gemotiveerd te houden. En om niet alleen het noodzakelijke te doen, maar ook werkelijk ownership (eigenaarschap) te nemen over wat hier gebeurt. Dus hij heeft nu mensen aangewezen voor verschillende delen van het project, zodat zij volledige verantwoordelijkheid kunnen nemen en trots kunnen zijn op wat zij doen. Nu al heeft het verschil gemaakt in de werksfeer, en ook sluit het beter aan bij de immigratie-wet hier. De regering van Zambia probeert alle werkgelegenheid voor Zambianen te houden. Dus mensen die van buiten Zambia komen moeten aantonen dat zij altijd iemand trainen om hun werk over te nemen, en ze krijgen alleen een baan als er geen enkele Zambiaan is die geschikter is voor het werk.

Dus, vanaf nu runt Carl the over-all coordinatie van al het werk, James is verantwoordelijk voor alles wat met de groenten te maken heeft en Happy voor alles met de kippen te maken heeft. Dit zorgt er tevens voor dat zowel James als Happy waardevolle ervaringen opdoen op hun eigen gebied. Ook hebben we de organisatie gevraagd om een pastor-vrijwilliger. Pastor Justin, die vrij dichtbij ons woont, is begonnen om elke week één keer langs te komen. Hij is verantwoordelijk voor alles wat met Outreach te maken heeft. Hij spreekt Tonga en is van nature cultureelgevoelig ;).

Deze herverdeling van het werk geeft Carl iets meer vrijheid om te werken aan de uitbreiding van het project. En zo was hij 21 en 22 februari in de gelegenheid om met mij mee te gaan naar een opfriscursus over bijenhouderij. Carls ambitie was om te promoveren van Junior-Junior-bij-assistent naar Junior Bijenhouden. Ik denk dat hijzelf verrast was over hoe hij ervan genoten heeft. De bij is een prachtig voorbeeld van Gods Schepping, niets is aan het toeval overgelaten. Op de laatste dag noemde iemand dat wetenschappers zeggen dat als de bijen zouden uitsterven, de mens waarschijnlijk nog maar vier jaar kan leven. De bijen zijn cruciaal voor een gezond natuurbeheer – één van de eerste verantwoordelijkheden die God aan ons mensen gaf. De afgelopen twee jaren hebben we een start gemaakt met bijenhouderij, maar dit bestond meestal uit het verwijderen van plekken waar ze niet welkom waren J. Maar nu hebben we grote plannen.  

Van het thuisfront:

Simon heeft zijn eerste zes weken (thuis)school afgerond en hij heeft me verrast met zijn vaardigheid om stil te zitten, zolang ik interessanter ben dan welk geluid er ook van buiten komt J. Hij praat non-stop en vindt alles interessant. Moeilijk om er aan te denken dat hij groot zal worden.

Rashelle heeft haar 9^e verjaardag gevierd, wat heel plezierig was. Ze nodigde twee meisjes uit voor een Safari-kampeer-verjaardag. Deze twee meisjes kan ze haar beste vriendinnen noemen. Maar… ook dit is deel van de werkelijkheid: over vijf weken zullen deze meisjes verhuizen. Het is niet altijd gemakkelijk om telkens weer afscheid te moeten nemen. Vooral voor de kinderen.

Een ander erg verdrietig goodbye, was dat onze hond na vier jaar plotseling dood ging. Het was op een dag dat het te nat was om van huis weg te gaan, dus we hadden niet de mogelijkheid om met haar naar de dierenarts te gaan.

Leven en dood, regen en droogte. We zijn niet altijd in beheer, hoe vaak we ook denken dat we dat wel zijn. Het is geweldig om een God te dienen die ons nooit verlaat of in de steek laat (Deut. 31:6).

We hebben jullie onlangs al aan Jeanet voorgesteld. Zij is naast het verzorgen van de nieuwsbrieven ook actief op Marktplaats. De opbrengst van de verkochte producten gaat volledig naar ons project in Zambia. We kunnen bijna niet geloven hoe goed dit loopt. Ze heeft ons verzekerd dat ze het met erg veel plezier doet en het absoluut geen moeite voor haar is (stiekem voelen wij ons een beetje schuldig J).

Please stop praying. J Your prayers have been answered. We have seen amazing amount of rain these last weeks. We had an exceptionally wet weekend a couple of weeks ago, and on Monday morning found that four of our closest neighbours’ houses have completely or partially collapsed. Good thing is that it is not in the coldest season yet, since they are sleeping in houses with curtains for walls temporarily. And the rain just keeps coming. Most of the harvest was lost before the rains started, but these rains are good to fill up the dams for the coming season, the winter crop.

Maybe I can tell you a bit about some of these neighbours. In the last month, Carl has moved around the way the project is organized. He was really struggling with motivating his co-workers, to not just do the necessary, but to really take ownership of what happens here. So, he has assigned people to different parts of the project, so that they can take full responsibility and pride in what they do. It has already made a difference in the work atmosphere, and also align better with the immigration law here. The Zambian government try to preserve all work opportunities for Zambians. So, expatriates need to proof that they are at all times training someone to take over their job, and they are only allowed any job if there is not any Zambian better suited to do the job.  So, from now on, Carl runs the over-all coordination, James is responsible for anything vegetable, and Happy for everything chicken. This will consequently also ensure that both James and Happy gain valuable experience in their different fields.  We have also asked the organization that we work with, Hope Builders Ministries Zambia, for a pastor volunteer. Pastor Justin, who lives relatively close to us, has started to come once a week, and his responsibility is everything Outreach. He is Tonga speaking, and naturally culturally sensitive;) Over the next few months I will introduce you to them individually. This picture shows you James.

This does give Carl a little more freedom to work on expanding the project. And so on the 21-22 February, he was free to join me for a refresher course in beekeeping. Carl’s ambition was to be promoted from Junior-Junior bee- assistant, to Junior Beekeeper. I think he himself was surprised at how much he enjoyed it. The bee is a beautiful example of God’s Creation, nothing is left to chance. Someone mentioned on the last day, that scientists say that if bees were to become extinct, humans can maybe live another 4years. They are crucial to our healthy management of nature- one of our first God-given responsibilities as humans. We have made a start to working with them over the last two years, but this has mostly consisted of removing them from where they were not welcome. But now, we have great plans. Watch this spot…

On the home front:

 Simon has done his first 6 weeks of school, and has surprised me with his ability to sit still, as long as I am more interesting than whatever sounds come in from outside. He talks non-stop, and finds everything interesting. Sad to think he will grow up.

Rashelle had her 9^th birthday, which was lots of fun. They invited two girls over for a Safari/camping birthday, who I guess you can call their best friends. But this is part of our reality, at the end of March, these girls will move away. It is not always easy to have a constant wave of farewells. Especially for the children. 

Another very sad goodbye, was to our dog that suddenly passed away after four years. It was on a day that it was too wet to get out of our area, so we did not have the option of getting her to help. 

Life and death, rain and drought. We are not always in control, no matter how much we think we are. It is great to serve a God that never leaves nor forsakes us.  

We would like to thank to people who have special projects that benefit the work here. Jeanet, to whom we’ve introduced you before, has a online ‘shop’ on the Dutch equivalent of Amazon, where she sells second hand stuff that she collects from her family and friends. We can’t believe how this has taken off!! And that money comes to Zambia and goes straight into the project. What a blessing!
